Restaurant Verglec

The restaurant is located in the heart of the baroque city center of Varaždin, just a few meters away from Stančić Square, which features the Sermage Palace, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The staff, the restaurant's greatest asset, combines creativity in food preparation with professionalism and friendliness to provide the best possible experience. The comfortable atmosphere is enhanced by the sounds of the verglaš, a traditional musician who entertains guests with his unique instrument. The space consists of 140 seats both inside the restaurant and on the terrace, making it an ideal venue for both individual guests and larger tourist groups. Whether it's a celebration of special occasions like weddings, communions, confirmations, baptisms, business gatherings, or more, Restaurant Verglec is the ideal venue.

**The legend of the restaurant...**

In one of the quiet and peaceful streets of Varaždin, historically called Mala Gaza, Šoštarska, Kazališna, Franjevačka, and today Kranjčevićeva, lived many skilled artisans, including the cobbler Master Floh. The story goes that he was one of Varaždin's greatest lovers of good food and drink, joy, and music. For many years, Master Floh enjoyed the food of local taverns and guild feasts. After returning home from his gourmet adventures, content and full, he was always accompanied by his faithful friend, the Varaždin musician and verglaš Felix. Believing that the cheerful sound of the vergla protected the body from dark forces and drove away evil spirits from the house, the music, along with a glass of honey rakija, would often finish in the entrance of his home.

When he grew old and no longer went to feasts, Master Floh, to continue enjoying his favorite dishes, had a brick oven built in the courtyard where his wife, a skilled cook named Đurđa, would prepare his beloved dishes such as Baked Veal Steak or Varaždin Roast with Mlince (a type of pasta), a recipe created under his guidance. He also ordered a vergla and had it placed in the entrance of their home. As the story goes, every evening, for a brief moment, the cheerful sounds of the vergla could be heard from Master Floh’s house, bringing joy, happiness, and love to him and his wife.

Today, nearly two and a half centuries later, in memory of Master Floh and his love for great food, Restaurant Verglec continues the tradition of preparing local dishes from this region, with the unforgettable sounds of the vergla, under the patronage of Varaždin’s angels. Formerly known as Šibenik and Grenadir, the restaurant now proudly carries on the legacy of this wonderful tradition.
